We have seen dentists doing magic with their probes and scalers. They have been remarkably fixing our looks.

We have often seen people’s appearance getting changed after certain procedures. That’s what is called cosmetic dentistry. Let’s know a bit more about it.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

As the name suggests, it is a collection of procedures that help a person reshape his/her appearance for good. In other words,  it is a method of professional oral care that focuses on improving the appearance of your teeth.

And when the appearance of teeth is changed, it automatically changes the appearance of the face. Unlike other procedures, this isn’t related to a particular procedure but a number of them.

In other words, cosmetic dentistry includes a number of procedures and all of them have the same objective – to make a patient look better. You must have gotten a procedure done without realizing that it is a part of cosmetic dentistry e.g tooth bleaching, bracing, etc.

These are a part of cosmetic dentistry since they have everything to do with your appearance.

When do I need a Cosmetic Dentist?

You can be in need of a cosmetic dentist both in an emergency or normal situations. Let me explain it to you in a better way.

For example, a person had an accident and broke his/her tooth. Here he’d need a cosmetic dentist to fix it. This is one part of it. The other consists of the procedures that are performed to treat natural conditions like crooked teeth, chipped or cracked teeth, discolored teeth, missing teeth, gaps between teeth, gummy smiles, etc.

This clearly indicates that cosmetic dentistry is all about fixing one’s appearance.

Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Cosmetic dentistry isn’t about one or two procedures but consists of a lot of them, all of them being related to making the appearance better. Let’s have a look at some of the common procedures involved.

1. Cosmetic Teeth Whitening:

One of the widely known and done procedures, teeth whitening is something everyone is familiar with. This is done to make your teeth whiter and brighter. An easy-to-do process that can be done at any local clinic and in a single visit.

At first, the plaque, tartar, and other debris is removed from each tooth’s surface. It is followed by bleaching that’s done to make the color tone of the tooth lighter. Most of us must be quite aware of it since it is done almost in every clinic.

2. Cosmetic Dental Implants:

Dental implants are done to replace a missing tooth. You may have lost it in an accident or due to any other reason like cavities, etc.

A small titanium screw is inserted into the jaw at the site where the tooth is missing. This serves as the support for a crown. These implants look natural to an extent that they are almost indistinguishable from the surrounding teeth.

They are permanently secured into place after the bone and supporting tissue get fused. One must make sure to adopt a hygienic lifestyle after the procedure

3. Cosmetic Dental Veneers

You must be aware of this procedure quite well. Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from dental porcelain or composite that are used to cover the front teeth.

This is fixed to the tooth with the assistance of cementing material. These veneers last for an average of twenty years. The best quality of dental veneers is that they match exactly with the surrounding teeth making it very difficult for someone to figure out.

4. Cosmetic Tooth Bonding:

Tooth bonding is the process in which tooth-colored materials are bonded to the tooth.

This is a procedure that can be used to repair or improve the appearance of a tooth that has been badly stained, broken, or chipped.

The best thing about this procedure is that it is completely reversible which means that you can reverse it whenever you wish to.

5. Cosmetic Tooth Shaping:

This is something in which you can see immediate developments. Also known as enamel shaping, this is done to shape the misshapen teeth.

The dentist usually does it by filling or removing some enamel that helps the broken tooth regain its shape. This procedure is usually painless and doesn’t take you a lot of visits to the clinic.

These are not all. There are many other procedures that are a part of cosmetic dentistry like porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, etc. As of now, it must be clear to you that cosmetic dentistry is more about a patient looking good than needing it on an urgent basis.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of cosmetic dentistry.

Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry :
