Orthognathic Surgery

Transform your smile and jaw function with orthognathic surgery! Our expert team of orthodontists and oral surgeons work together to correct jaw irregularities, enhancing chewing, speech, breathing, and facial harmony.

What is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, is a specialised treatment designed to correct irregularities of the jaw bones. It's not just about improving your smile; it's about restoring proper jaw function, which can significantly impact your ability to chew, speak, and even breathe. By repositioning the jaw bones, we can achieve a harmonious balance between your facial features and improve your overall quality of life. This surgery is a collaborative effort between your orthodontist and an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon, ensuring a comprehensive and tailored treatment plan.
Ultimately, orthognathic surgery allows us to address issues that cannot be improved with braces alone.

Who is Orthognathic Surgery for?

You may be a candidate for orthognathic surgery if you experience any of the following:

1.

Significant overbite, underbite, or crossbite

2.

Open bite (a gap between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed)

3.

Facial asymmetry (uneven facial features)

4.

Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking

5.

Sleep apnoea or other breathing problems related to jaw alignment

It's important to understand that orthognathic surgery is typically recommended after facial growth has ceased, usually in early adulthood. A thorough evaluation, including clinical examination and X-rays are essential to determine if you are a suitable candidate.

The orthodontist will plan the tooth movement, and the oral maxillo-facial surgeon will plan the bone movement, therefore the two professionals work closely together.

What are the benefits?

Orthognathic surgery can provide numerous benefits, including:

1.

Improved chewing and biting function

2.

Enhanced speech clarity

3.

Improved breathing and relief from sleep apnoea

4.

Enhanced facial aesthetics and symmetry

5.

Increased self-confidence and quality of life.

What is the pathway?

The orthognathic surgery process involves several key stages:

1.

Initial Consultation: A comprehensive evaluation to assess your needs and discuss treatment options with the orthodontist.

2.

Secondary consultation with the Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon for a surgical assessment which will include further examinations as required:

3.

After both consultations Dr Ahmed Din and Manolis Heliotis will conduct an MDT (joint clinic appointment) to finalise the treatment plan and goals.

4.

Orthodontic Preparation: Braces or aligners are used to align your teeth in preparation for surgery.

5.

Pre-Surgical Planning: Advanced imaging and computer-aided planning are used to precisely map out the surgical procedure.

6.

Surgery: The oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs the surgery in a hospital setting.

7.

Recovery: A period of healing and swelling, typically lasting several weeks.

8.

Post-Operative Orthodontics: Fine-tuning of the bite and alignment after surgery.

9.

The whole process may take 18-36 months, depending on the severity of the case. We will use digital planning and 3D imaging to ensure accuracy and predictability throughout your treatment.
